This course is the part of Organic chemistry -III, which mainly focuses on the structural aspects, synthesis, and properties of different classes of Carbohydrates. This course also provides an introduction to Drug chemistry.

This course deals with Adsorption – types, adsorption of gases by solids – factors influencing adsorption –
Freundlich adsorption isotherm – Langmuir adsorption isotherm –derivation of Langmuir
adsorption isotherm. The BET theory (no derivation) – use of BET equation for the
determination of surface area.
Types of solutions – true, colloid and suspensions, Purification of colloids – Ultra
filtration and electrodialysis, optical and electrical properties of colloids. Electrical double layer and zeta potential. Coagulation of colloids, Hardy-Schulz rule. Micelles and critical
micelle concentration, sedimentation and streaming potential
